CCFM Drive Thru | April 20, 2020

Fresh & Local:

CCFM Drive Thru

We’re gearing up for another Drive Thru market this Sunday, April 26th, with new improvements in place to enhance efficiency and safety.

Customers can expect a more convenient ordering process - it’ll all be done online! We’ll provide a template to print out and complete to put in your car window so you’re ready to go when you get there, and market staff will assist in readying your vehicle for receiving your local goods. All vendors will be wearing face masks. If you don’t see gloves, it’s because vendors have been encouraged to use sanitizer between each customer, which is a more effective practice at protecting customers, vs gloves that primarily protect the wearer.

Details will be sent out in a follow up email this week!

Good Food Word of the Week:

While Market Umbrella is known for our farmers markets and fresh food access programs, food systems work touches on many social, economic, and environmental issues. The Good Food Word of the Week seeks to shed some light on these parts of our work and the way we talk - demystifying the jargon.

Earth Day

This week’s Good Food Word is Earth Day - Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Good food is a practice in sustainability for many reasons. Not only are “food miles” - the distance food travels from source to consumption - reduced when local food is consumed, but small farms tend to require less synthetic fertilizers and pesticides per acre than industrial monoculture farms, and tend to grow heirloom and other less common varieties thereby increasing biodiversity. Celebrate Earth Day this week by supporting local farms!

Picks of the Week:

CCFM Box

Crescent City Farmers Market has partnered with Top Box Foods and Refresh Farmers Market to provide you with healthy, local, and affordable food delivered to your home. The $40 CCFM box contains 8-12 items from CCFM vendors, mostly produce, and is offered twice weekly. We’re working on increasing the number available as they’ve been flying off the shelf but you can follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) for updates on when sales launch. Order online at Top Box Foods New Orleans. When you get your box, tag us in a pic of all the great dishes you make with it - we love to see the fruits and veggies in action!

Market Match, our program that doubles SNAP dollars spent, does apply so SNAP users can purchase the box for only $20! Choose “pay at pickup” and Top Box will contact you directly to process your SNAP payment.

Vendor of the Week:

Major Acre Farm

If you were a regular Thursday Market shopper, then you know the major abundance this one acre farm cultivates. Major Acre Farm, in Laplace, is now taking orders online for pick-up at majoracrefarm.com. Major Acre Farm, along with Grow Dat Youth Farm, was featured in a New York Times article highlighting the community spirit of New Orleans’ residents during this time of social distancing.

recipe of the week

Recipe of the Week:

One-Pot Turmeric Coconut Rice With Greens

This dinner is a one-pot wonder: it is both exciting and comforting, easy to cook, and able to feed a family. The rice is cooked in rich coconut milk and enlivened by lime and spring onions. The greens (chard, kale, or whatever you please) steam right on top. The recipe calls for coconut flakes, but if you don’t have any, don’t worry about it! We’re sure dinner will be just as good. This meal is great for modifications, too: you can add any herbs, protein, or vegetables to the pot for an even heartier dish. Enjoy!

What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter!
