Fresh & Local:

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who supported us during GiveNOLA day!!! Thanks to the generosity of donors, we raised $6,000! As you know, we are a non-profit that not only hosts the farmers markets, but runs a number of innovative fresh food incentive programs. We also operate a variety of kids programming including Meet Me at the Market field trips and farm to school work. These donations make all of this important community building and food systems work possible! Thanks as well to the vendors who donated delicious treats that went out to donors at market, and to the volunteers who helped out over the course of the day. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

Market Umbrella unveils a new website!

Until now, the Crescent City Farmers Market and Market Umbrella, the non-profit that runs the market in addition to the fresh food incentive programs listed above have had separate websites. Today, they are officially one, with all information about all of our markets, programs and organization conveniently located in one place (and with a search feature!). Please be aware that as we update links and all the other tech-y things that need to be done, you might experience some slowness or impeded access to different parts of the site over the next week or so. But please, take a moment to check it out. It’s a great way to find out more about participating in our various programs, volunteering, and about vendors and markets. Feel free to reach out if you experience website issues after this week.

Summer Squash

There will certainly come a day when we can’t stand to see the stuff anymore, but for now, we are absolutely thrilled at the sight of dark green fleshy zucchini and bright yellow summer squash to mark the arrival of the early summer season. Zucchini is well known for being an extremely prolific plant with a long growing season. If you’ve ever grown it yourself you know just how quickly they can grow. A tender eight-inch zuc’ left on the vine for just an extra day or two can transform into a behemoth of a vegetable, and won’t taste nearly as flavorful as the younger ones either. Break out the spiralizer, then stop by the market to pick up the first of this year’s summer squash. Available at all of our markets from Mendez Farms, Indian Springs Farmers Association, Poche’s Family Farm, Major Acre, or pick up a squash plant from Mizell Farm or Hot Plants and grow your own!

Fire up the Future

This year, the Made in New Orleans Foundation will be sending two aspiring chefs to New York, bringing them one step closer to achieving their professional goals in the culinary and hospitality industries.

The scholarship includes tuition to the International Culinary Center, housing, materials, a life changing internship at one of New York's most established restaurants, and on-going support from New Orleans.

Help us in spreading the word and nominating someone from New Orleans with a passion for the culinary industry.

Requirements and application are available on the MiNO website. Deadline: May 31, 2019.

Vendor of the Week:

Mizell Farms

Jim Mizell is a trusty anchor of the Tuesday Uptown market, and has been for many years. You’ve certainly seen his colorful and abundant tables as you enter the market, and if you’re lucky, you’ve also collected some of his plants and gardening expertise for yourself. Now, you can also expect to find Jim at our Wednesday Ochsner market. It’s not too late to get your garden planted for the spring and summer seasons, especially if you’re opting for plant starts over seeds. Stop by soon and get to growing your own food!

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:

Thali Llama

After traveling all over India, Tyler and Merritt returned to New Orleans and launched their regional Indian pop-up Thali Llama. Thali Llama focuses on different regional cuisines of India, where the couple explores dishes learned throughout their travels. Together, business and life partners Tyler and Merritt pop up at the Bucktown market and will join us at the Green Plate Special for the month of May! Stop by every Tuesday for some heartwarming dishes including mango curry, butter chicken, and more!
