Spring is Springing! | April 8, 2024

Fresh & Local:

Spring is Springing!

We’re a few weeks into the season (one of our favorite times at the market!) and we can confirm, Spring is Springing! The weather is euphoric and the bounty of sunny day farming is plentiful. Hello piquant alliums and sweet summer squash! Get ready for a whole new cornucopia of warm-weather crops, from green, butter, and snap beans, sugar and snow peas, new potatoes, to cucumbers.

Stock up with your favorite producers at the Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday markets for the last of the winter harvest and to whet your appetite for a colorful spring plate! Isabel’s Tamales & Produce has already busted out the cukes and green beans, Poché Family Farm has the shiniest creole onions, and Amorphous Gardens returns with garlic galore. And if you’re ready to dive into the season with a sweet tooth, Paw Paw’s Donuts is serving up Strawberry Jam Donuts made fresh with the strawberries from Johndale Farms.

Don’t forget that you can feel the season in our Market Match home delivery box as well, with fresh produce rotating weekly from our markets! Orders for next Tuesday’s box are live today through Friday.

A Visit From Market Umbrella’s Co-Founder, Richard McCarthy!

Richard McCarthy came to visit our office this week and catch us up to speed in all of the amazing work he is doing across the world in food systems and markets! Richard founded Market Umbrella and the first flagship Crescent City Farmers Market in 1995. Since then, he has been a vital part of international working groups like Slow Food International, Farmers Market Coalition, and now, the World Farmers Markets Coalition. We’re honored to continue growing the legacy that he began almost 30 years ago with CCFM. Visit his personal website to learn more about him and keep up with his writing!

Vendor of the Week:

Mizell’s Farm

Jim Mizell is an anchor of the Tuesday Uptown market and has been for many years. You probably recognize him from his vibrant and ample spread of plants that greet you as you enter the market. If you’re lucky, you’ve also collected some of his plants and gardening expertise for yourself. Stop by our Tuesday market to check out Mizell’s wide selection of herbs, plant starts, decorative plants and flowers, and more! Pick up everything you’ll need to start your spring garden, including the generously shared wisdom from Mizell himself.

Recipe of the Week:

Mizuna Myoga Salad

This week's recipe is a Mizuna Myoga Salad. Say that three times fast! In this week's CCFM Box home delivery through Top Box, we had mizuna from the Indian Springs Farmers Association. Mizuna is a Japanese mustard green that is easy to love and easy to prepare!
