Markets Restart Tuesday! | September 13, 2021

Fresh & Local:

Markets Restart Tuesday!

After two weeks of market closures due to Hurricane Ida, we are excited to share with you that Crescent City Farmers Markets are resuming their regular schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14 at Uptown Square (200 Broadway) from 8 am to 12 pm. It will take a while for vendors to fully recover from the storm and markets to look like you’re used to seeing them, but you’ll find community services, hot prepared foods and music throughout the week as we get back to normal.

We will have live music to give us all something to groove to while we shop and get back in the swing of things. On Tuesday we’ll host The Tangier’s Combo; Thursday, September 16 at the Lafitte Greenway will host the Nicholas Solnick Jazz Quintet; and on Sunday, September 19, we’ll enjoy the tunes of Marty Christianson.

To help with community members’ disaster-related needs, we will be providing assistance in applying for Disaster SNAP at every market this week.

Come on down and restock your fridge, and support local farmers, fisheries, ranchers and food makers as they get back on their feet post Ida. Thursday will also have guest prepared food vendors Hippie Kitchen and Radical Joy Bakery. And on Sunday you can find Bayou St. Cake, Seafood Sally’s and Clairly Vegan with ready to eat meals and desserts. A special note for shoppers that have SNAP, DSNAP or P-EBT: as part of Hurricane Ida relief, these programs are allowing those dollars to be used to purchase hot food at markets through September 28th.

Looking forward to seeing you all at markets this week!

Picks of the Week:

Crescent Fund

Located along the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, Louisiana Gourmet Produce brings ripe Creole tomatoes from rich alluvial soil each spring, as well as a slew of interesting heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, squash, carrots, radish, and peppers among other things. Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc on the farm, as owner Tony Accardo demonstrates here in front of his storm-ravaged barn. In order to help vendors like Tony recover and return to market as soon as possible with your favorite fresh fall produce, Market Umbrella is collecting donations through the Crescent Fund - a relief fund where all contributions are distributed directly to CCFM farmers, fishers, and food producers. Over 200 donors have contributed to the Crescent Fund to date, and we are over halfway to our goal of $40,000 - but we need your help to reach that goal and best support our network of producers! Please take a moment to make a donation today. And we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who have donated so far, especially to our community partner Fidelity Bank for their generous gift - it means the world to us and our entire market family!

Disaster SNAP, SNAP, and P-EBT Benefits

Disaster SNAP, also called DSNAP for short, provides eligible households who do not currently receive SNAP benefits with help buying groceries due to lost income or damages following a disaster. DSNAP has not been declared for residents of parishes affected by Hurricane Ida yet, although we anticipate this declaration very soon. It is strongly recommended to pre-register for DSNAP to expedite the process.

Here’s how to pre-register for DSNAP:

  1. Visit www.dcfs.louisiana.gov/cafe
  2. If you have an account, login using your credentials and fill out DSNAP Registration located on MyAccount Home page
  3. If you do not have an account, visit the website www.dcfs.louisiana.gov/cafe and select Click Here To Get Started - follow the instructions to create an account

If you are an existing SNAP recipient, you do not qualify for DSNAP. However, current SNAP recipients in the 18 Louisiana parishes impacted by Hurricane Ida, including Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard, will receive automatic 55% replacement benefits of each household’s monthly allotment for August which should have been automatically loaded onto recipients’ SNAP EBT cards on September 11. For more information and other parishes receiving the benefit click here.

Normally, SNAP and P-EBT recipients can use benefits to buy prepackaged food items that are meant to be taken home and cooked, but hot foods prepared and sold to be eaten on the premises would be prohibited. Now until September 28, 2021, SNAP, DSNAP and P-EBT recipients can use benefits to buy hot food at participating Louisiana stores where EBT cards are accepted, including at Crescent City Farmers Markets.

Additionally, Disaster SNAP will be eligible for Market Match at all Crescent City Farmers Market locations and participating partners. Market Match is a dollar-for-dollar match on SNAP (including P-EBT and DSNAP) purchases. Matched dollars can be redeemed to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and food-bearing plants so join us at market to restock your kitchen and garden - supporting local food producers and doubling your buying power at the same time!

Market Umbrella is now providing assistance with registering for SNAP/Disaster SNAP. Our office hours are Tuesday 9am-Noon and Thursday 1pm-4pm. Click here to be contacted with more information on SNAP and DSNAP or visit us at the market for information.

Top Box is Back!

Top Box is ready to help you restock shelves with their Makin’ (Do) Groceries menu of home delivery products. You can order local a la carte items and you can also once again order for the Crescent City Farmers Market Box. Check it out here.

vendor of the week

Vendor of the Week:

Love to all our vendors impacted by Hurricane Ida

With the path of Ida so devastatingly comprehensive, there was no way we could pick just one vendor to highlight this week. Market Umbrella staff have been checking in with our vendors over the last two seeks to see how they fared in the storm and what their needs were in its aftermath, connecting producers to supplies, to our Crescent Fund as well as additional resources and recovery funding opportunities. We have been amazed by the persistence, bravery, and passion they show in the face of adversity and recovery. We are so grateful to do this work with such amazing partners, and to help support the remarkable small business owners who make our food system so special. We hope to see you at markets this week and in coming weeks as vendors return, and join us in supporting our resilient local food system.
