Crescent Fund: Hurricane Ida Relief Fund

When tragedy strikes Crescent City Farmers Market vendors and disrupts our local food system, Market Umbrella's Crescent Fund has historically operated to collect donations from market friends and supporters to provide immediate, direct relief to our vendors.

In light of the extensive damage sustained by local farms, fishing boats, and other infrastructure needed to operate these small, local food producing businesses due to Hurricane Ida, Market Umbrella has reignited the Crescent Fund. All donations made to this fund will go directly to the farmers, fishers, ranchers, and food producers of the Crescent City Farmers Market community so that they can return to market with your favorite products as soon as possible. Please, donate today!

Your gift would be an investment in the future of New Orleans local food system, getting vendors back to market so that we can continue facilitating access to fresh, nutritious food for the New Orleans community, including low-income shoppers who depend on our programs like Market Match and Market Mommas Club.

Backwater Foie Gras

Backwater Foie Gras was started in 2019 as a way to return to natural, sustainable, pre-industrial farming. They have taken inspiration from friends who moved to LA from France and from 5,000 years of agricultural and culinary tradition. The family farm, run by three generations out in Bush, LA, encourages curious customers to reach out to them online or pay a visit to the property to better understand what it means to humanely raise foie gras. Ross McKnight, the market face of the operation, says that their pasture-raised, artisanal approach to farming the ducks has been a game-changer for many doubtful minds and that right now, the focus is “creating something beautiful in cooperation with the natural abilities of these amazing waterfowl.” The dedication and effort that keeps the family together and in business are present in their care for their quality products. Ross can currently be found at our Thursday Mid-City market with foie gras and other duck charcuterie, as well as various frozen cuts of duck.
